In honor of National Save Your Vision Month, here are 3 ways to save vision

March is National Save Your Vision Month, so today, I welcome a guest post from the Medical Research Charities on behalf of Foundation Fighting Blindness.***In support of National Save Your Vision Month, we want to shine some light on conditions causing blindness and ways you can get involved with the discovery of treatments and cures.h5>Support medical research

One of the best ways to get involved is to support organizations that fund research to better understand and treat serious retinal diseases. Medical Research Charities sponsors a number of excellent organizations and medical researchers that are finding cures for diseases causing blindness.

Take care of your own vision

Getting your eyes checked on a regular basis is one of the easiest and most important ways to take care of your sight. A comprehensive eye exam keeps your eyes healthy; not only will you have an updated prescription, but you can also check for early signs of eye disease. Prevention and early detection are the best ways to maintain healthy vision for years to come.

Celebrate and support those with low vision

If someone you know is experiencing a condition which causes low vision or blindness, love that person well. Support them when needed, and respect that their dreams and aspirations are just as possible as yours – they just might need more creativity and determination to get there. Be their cheerleader. You don’t have to physically see to have a vision.Your support of Medical Research Charities will:

Fund innovative research to end blindness

MRC supports the Foundation Fighting Blindness, which improves the lives of 10 million Americans currently suffering vision loss from a variety of blinding diseases. The Foundation funds leading research in promising areas such as genetics, gene therapy, retinal cell transplantation, and pharmaceutical and nutritional therapies. They also support the Glaucoma Research Foundation, which investigates the second leading cause of blindness. Glaucoma is a complicated disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss.

Develop new treatments and prevention techniques

Not only do these foundations seek to eventually cure retinal diseases; they are also constantly developing new therapies which improve the quality of life for millions of people today.

Raise awareness

Blindness is often misunderstood, and the diversity of retinal diseases and extent of vision impairment leads to a different experience of blindness for each person. These foundations educate communities to better understand blindness, which will lead to better healthcare, treatments and greater accessibility for those with low vision to perform daily activities with greater ease.

Provide support and information for people with retinal diseases

The Foundation Fighting Blindness and the Glaucoma Research Foundation both provide information for individuals and families to better understand conditions causing blindness and how to access the most effective treatments. They also provide a supportive community where people experiencing blindness or low vision can find understanding and the resources they need.Get involved by giving today to Medical Research Charities.
